What do President Obama’s recent proposal for college textbooks to go digital, near-field communication (NFC) and consumers’ embrace of Apple products like the iPad have in common?

They are all indicators of how people are changing the way they receive ‘the media’

People’s receipt of media today is a far cry from how it was received ten years ago, where it was much more commonplace to see people reading newspapers, jamming out to their favorite tunes on Discmans, and renting videos at the local Blockbuster. Now, newspapers are delivered to us on iPads, record stores have been replaced by the iTunes store, and Redbox kiosks deliver us the latest DVD and BlueRay releases.

This changing of the times, however, seems to reveal a greater theme. It seems, quite possibly, that many of the media channels we previously used have become obsolete due to the overwhelming number of commercials and advertisements plaguing our favorite television programs, print publications, and radio stations. Nevertheless, the arrival and accessibility of technology like Apple’s iPad and iPod, TiVo and DVRs allow people to have a much easier time separating the wheat from the chaff, filtering out noise and getting the information they need ‘on-demand.’ More than ever, people have options on how they receive their media and have less obligation to a ‘source,’ when what they really want is the information.

All things considered, the 21st century is to media what the ‘60s were to the hippies, an era of discovery, protest and evolution.

Since 2001 –and even before that, for some of us- people’s dependence on technology and technology’s role in our everyday lives has changed dramatically. Now, if you don’t have a <a href"http://www.technology-digital.com/smart_phones/">‘smart phone’, you might as well be a leper and if you’re not connected to the Internet… ….well, you may be well-served to not let that slip in public. The bottom line is that technology has remarkably impacted the way we live, do business and communicate.

We are transitioning away from the age of endless papers cluttering our desks, 30-lb. backpacks full of chemistry and calculus textbooks and clunky-old, portable media devices and into an era of paperless, compact and digitally delivered media which, in many cases, is hand-selected by the users themselves.
