I graduated from California State University Fullerton with a degree in communication/public relations in May 2011. With summer in full swing, I was on the lookout for a job. With the economy being in a tough position, I felt businesses were not willing to commit a fresh graduate with little professional experience. As I realized this epiphany, I decided to pursue another avenue of getting my foot in the door: internships.
I had interned at an online company in the summer for a short period of time. While I got experience and a nice reference, the environment wasn’t the right fit, the industry wasn’t for me, and of course, there was no compensation available to support myself. However, looking back on it, I feel that experience during the summer lead me to a fall internship at WDM Group.
I was attracted to WDM Group from the get go. I came across their intern want-ad on a job search website. I was hooked by the way the presented their website, and professionalism along with it. Personally, the WDM Group approach to an internship is the kind of experience any graduate would want after completing college.
Going into the interview, I knew this company was young (like me), as it was formed in 2007, but I felt it was a good fit as I could see my future blossom along with the company.
I nailed the interview by showcasing my experience and connecting with the interviewer (my current boss), and began the three month internship immediately. Everyone in the office was really nice to me, and made me feel included… the shear environment surpassed my other internships by far! It felt good to be recognized about my good work ethic and creative enthusiasm.
Overall, my 90 day internship went great! I clicked with my marketing team. They offered me opportunities to build public relations knowledge. I learned new skills and gained experience by learning on the job through great coaching and mentoring. At the end of my internship I was offered a full time gig, and I can’t wait to officially start my career at WDM Group.
